PERIPHERAL VISION
PERIPHERAL AWARENESS, NOT JUST RAW SPEED
This mode asks you to keep your gaze near the centre while detecting a cue away from the point you are directly looking at. It combines visual detection, attention and reaction speed. The result therefore should not be compared directly with a central-screen Classic Reaction score.
Use a comfortable viewing distance and avoid moving your eyes around to hunt for the next target. The challenge is more meaningful when you maintain a stable central focus. Screen size and viewing distance change how far the target sits into your peripheral field, so keep those conditions consistent between sessions.
SETTING UP THE TEST
Sit at a normal viewing distance and keep the browser at a comfortable size. A larger monitor or a closer viewing distance changes the visual angle of the target, which can change difficulty. If you want to track progress over time, keep the same screen, zoom level and approximate viewing distance.
Peripheral performance is also affected by where the cue appears. Targets farther from your central focus can be harder to detect, and visual clutter makes the task more demanding. Treat the score as a game-based attention measure rather than a vision examination.
WHEN TO USE THIS MODE
This test is useful when you want something different from a centre-screen reaction pad. It is especially relevant to activities where events can appear away from the point you are directly looking at, such as games with a wide field of view. Pair it with Choice Reaction to compare detection against decision speed.
